A 1994 graduate of St. Mary's College, Genny passed away on November 25, 2000 after a five-year battle with Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma, a form of cancer. She was 28 years old.

To honor and remember Genny, her friends and family established a scholarship in her name at St. Mary's College. Genny's only request was that the student chosen have a sense of humor. As a result, the scholarship is granted based on the content of a student's character, rather than on academic merit. Thus, character, independent thinking, love of life, an appreciation of poetry, artistic expression, trust in self, and a positive outlook are the kinds of qualities considered when awarding Genny's scholarship.
